"Portraits of Nature" at Davis Community Gallery

“Portraits of Nature,” an exhibit of original photographs by Kelsey Bair and Steve Whalen, opens on Friday, October 16, 2009 at Davis Community Gallery with an Artists’ Reception from 5:30pm to 7pm.Both Kelsey Bair and Steve Whalen are Davis residents who capture a wide range of natural subjects in their color and black and white prints, many of which are digitally manipulated to accent particular aspects of the subject. “Portraits of Nature” will be on exhibit through January 29, 2010.

Kelsey Bair is a junior at Da Vinci High School.  She has been a photographer since childhood, when she discovered her father’s very retro Canon camera.  Kelsey enjoys photographing nature and is particularly interested in capturing light and shadows.  One of her current interests is photography of silhouettes and showing how lighting changes the texture of an object in an image.  A lifelong resident of Davis, Kelsey first came to know CommuniCare as an infant, spending many hours at the Davis Community Clinic while her mother worked in the prenatal program.  Kelsey is thrilled to contribute to CommuniCare programs through her first photography show.

Steve Whalen is native to Northern California and has been an avid photographer since the 1960’s.  He began shooting Classic Auto shows with a Browning as a child and moved to 35mm in the 1970’s.  The advent of digital technology created new opportunities and challenges for photographers.  Today Steve explores two ends of this spectrum.  On one end, the rapid frame to frame and memory capacity of today’s cameras enhances the ability to “Capture the Moment”.  Steve is the team photographer for the Davis Diamonds Gymnastics and can be found on the sidelines at just about any gymnastic event in the area.   At the other end, software allows for photo processing beyond what was possible through standard dark room techniques.  Steve enjoys using a number of filters and processing techniques to enhance and emphasize various aspects of a photo to “Create an Image”.  Along with Kelsey, Steve is thrilled to contribute to CommuniCare through his first photography show.
